Ryland is dual qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor-Advocate (Higher Rights) and has over 15 years of legal experience in the construction industry. Apart from his work as legal adviser on projects around the world, the focus of his work is dispute resolution and he is an experienced advocate and lead representative in adjudication, arbitration and commercial litigation
Prior to reading law and being called to the Bar in 2003, Ryland started his career as a paralegal with Linklaters and Brian Cave, working principally in commercial and civil litigation. He then worked as in-house Counsel for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (Mitsubishi) in Taiwan for four years on the Taiwan High Speed Railway Project
In 2008 Ryland returned to the UK and joined consultancy firm Alway Associates as a Director, and is now Managing Partner with Silver Shemmings Ash LLP
Ryland acted on a wide variety of construction, building, rail and civil engineering projects which involve the investigation, management and successful resolution of contractual and commercial disputes. Highly experienced, both as a party representative and advocate in all forms of dispute resolution, including arbitration, adjudication, mediation, and dispute boards, he is renowned with experts and lawyers alike
Ryland has acted as lead representative and advocate in hundreds of adjudications. He has carved a niche in adjudication and arbitral proceedings on behalf of Employers, Developers, Contractors and Sub-Contractors. His work includes contractual and common law advice, representation at hearings and drafting of claims, counterclaims and defences
Ryland regularly advises clients upon the myriad of issues that can impact upon a project through its lifecycle from pre-contract to post-completion, including strategic and dispute avoidance advice during the engineering, construction and development of projects. He has significant experience in the vetting, drafting and negotiation of a range of construction and engineering contracts (including the JCT and NEC suite of contracts) and in the drafting and reviewing of main contracts, sub-contracts, bonds, guarantees, collateral warranties and terms of business
